Mastering the basics of manual driving

Clutch control, gears and muscle memory become easier when you focus on a few repeatable habits rather than trying to understand every mechanical detail.

Getting StartedMastering the basics of manual driving
1

Use the clutch for three core jobs

Moving off, changing gear and preventing a stall as the car slows or stops.

2

Listen and feel

Engine sound and vibration are useful clues for gear choice and when the car needs more or less power.

3

Build muscle memory

Practise smooth, deliberate movements. The aim is for the controls to become automatic enough that your attention stays on the road.
